Volkswagen Brake Rotor Resurfacing Service

Is Volkswagen Brake Rotor Resurfacing a Necessary Maintenance Procedure?

Drivers tend to be aware of the need for new brake pads after a certain amount of driving, and they understand brake fluid needs to be topped off regularly and drained and refilled on occasion, but brake rotor resurfacing is less known about because it isn’t done as often. Brake rotors are steel, much harder than the brake pads that rub against them, so it’s easy to think they don’t get damaged. However, such a concept is untrue. The amount of force applied by the pads to the rotors does grind away at them over time, especially in certain driving conditions in which dust and debris from the road get in between the two.

Why Volkswagen Brake Rotors Need To Be Resurfaced

The fact is, brake rotors do wear down and need to be resurfaced, on average after anywhere from 30,000-70,000 miles of driving. If that seems like a wide range of miles, it is. It not only depends on the model vehicle and thickness of brake rotors it uses but can also vary wildly depending on local road conditions and individual driving styles. Typically, during brake pad replacement, a talented technician can evaluate the rotors’ condition and determine whether they need to be resurfaced or can last through another cycle of brake pads. It’s generally better to resurface the rotors before it’s an absolute necessity than waiting until they are damaged beyond repair.

What Happens when Brake Rotors Wear Out

The problem with worn-out brake rotors is multi-fold. It’s rare that they fail completely, but they cause problems that compound themselves exponentially over time. As the rotors develop grooves, they provide less surface area for the brake pads to contact, making brake systems work less efficiently. In turn, that leads to brake pads wearing out prematurely. It also causes excess heat to build up, which causes brake pads to wear out before expected. The excess heat can also cause the rotors to warp, which exacerbates the problem further. A final consideration is that although resurfacing is a proven solution, if the damage is allowed to remain without proper repair, resurfacing likely won’t work. The rotors will have to be replaced instead, which is a more expensive repair.
